Bariatric Surgery
Overview
Bariatric surgery is weight-loss surgery for the morbidly obese patient which is
defined as being 100 pounds or more above your ideal body weight or a body mass
index (BMI) greater than 40 (BMI Chart). Procedures performed for bariatric surgery
include the Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass, BPD (Biliopancreatic Diversion) or Duodenal
Switch, and Adjustable Gastric Banding. Many of these procedures are performed laparoscopically.
This specialty area is staffed by three surgeons.
Getting Started
If you are interested in bariatric surgery, you are required to
attend an informational session. The information sessions are held from 6-7 pm on
the 3rd Monday of each month in the Lower Storz Pavilion Rooms 1-4 which is accessible
from Clarkson Tower.
Before attending the informational session, please print and complete
this questionnaire (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). If you are unable to
print this questionnaire or have further questions, please contact us at 559-9500
or by e-mail bariatricsurgery@unmc.edu, we will be able to answer any of your questions
and/or mail a packet of information to you.
Bring the completed packet, a copy of your insurance card - front and back, and
2 copies of the past 2 years of your medical records. This documentation is required
in order for a request to be submitted to your insurance.
There is also a New Life Post Surgery support group from 6-7 pm held on the 1st
Monday of each month in Rooms 6-7 of the Lower Storz Pavilion accessible from Clarkson
Tower.
The surgeons and physician assistant see potential patients for evaluations in the
UMA Surgery clinic located on 5th floor of the Durham Outpatient Center, only after
you have received proper approval from your insurance company.
